Three Dead, Over 60 Injured in Karachi’s Independence Day Aerial Firing

Karachi, Aug 14: At least three people — including an eight-year-old girl and a senior citizen — were killed and more than 60 others injured during Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations in Karachi due to reckless aerial firing, local media reported.
The incidents occurred across multiple neighbourhoods as gunfire and fireworks erupted at midnight. In Azizabad Block-8, a young girl was struck by a stray bullet and died before reaching hospital. In Korangi, a man named Stephen was fatally hit while travelling. Another death linked to celebratory firing was reported in a separate locality.
Rescue officials said 64 people with gunshot wounds were taken to various hospitals, several in critical condition. Police have arrested 20 suspects and seized weapons and ammunition.
Authorities condemned the practice of jubilation firing, calling it dangerous and irresponsible, and urged the public to mark Independence Day through safer means.
Incidents of aerial firing were reported from areas including Liaquatabad, Baldia, Keamari, Lyari, Akhtar Colony, Orangi Town, Paposh Nagar, North Nazimabad, Surjani Town, Sharifabad, Zaman Town, and Landhi.
Separately, five people were killed while trying to foil robberies, while others died from stray bullets in unrelated shootings. Police said investigations are underway and pledged strict action against offenders as raids continue to restore order in the city.
