Railways Planning Direct Jammu–Srinagar Train Service Soon

Srinagar, Nov 5: The Northern Railways is expediting key operational and redevelopment works in the Jammu division to launch a direct train service between Jammu and Srinagar — a major milestone in J&K’s rail connectivity.

A senior railway official told that trains currently operating from Katra to Srinagar are expected to begin their journey from Jammu railway station soon. “Flash floods had earlier delayed progress, but work is now being fast-tracked to make the direct service possible,” the official said.

The Jammu–Katra stretch remains the primary focus, with bridge construction, track laying, and station upgrades underway. The official added that track work is nearly complete, while civil infrastructure, including new platforms and passenger facilities, is in the final stages.

Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu Division, said, “At present, the train runs up to Katra. Once all bottlenecks are cleared, direct operations from Jammu to Srinagar will commence. We expect progress by November.”

The Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project is among India’s most significant engineering feats, featuring the world’s highest railway bridge over the Chenab River and the country’s first cable-stayed railway bridge at Anji Khad.
