Railways Approves Baramulla–Uri Rail Link, Qazigund–Budgam Doubling Project

Srinagar, Sept 4: The Ministry of Railways has approved two key projects in Jammu and Kashmir — a 40.2 km Baramulla–Uri railway line and the doubling of the 73.5 km Qazigund–Budgam stretch.

According to the official statement, the Baramulla–Uri line will extend rail connectivity up to Uri, close to the Kaman Post near the Line of Control (LoC). The project will include three Road Under Bridges and nine Road Over Bridges, ensuring all-weather access in an area often cut off during winters.

Officials highlighted that the line also holds strategic importance, as Baramulla and Uri tehsils host major Army establishments near the border. The project will be built as a new single broad-gauge track, requiring fresh land acquisition.

Meanwhile, the Qazigund–Budgam doubling project aims to ease congestion on the existing single line to Baramulla. With the Katra–Banihal section expected to be commissioned in 2025, the Kashmir rail corridor will be fully integrated with the national railway network, boosting both passenger traffic and freight movement.

The doubling project will also facilitate the smooth movement of military special trains carrying troops and equipment, the statement added.
