Sajad Lone Slams Assembly’s “Silence” On 1987 Poll “Rigging” Resolution
Peoples Conference president and MLA Handwara Sajad Gani Lone on Thursday slammed the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly Secretariat over silence on his resolution seeking a probe into the rigging of the 1987 Assembly elections.
In a post on X, Lone questioned the silence on the resolution. “The Assembly cannot act like a post office that sends convenient letters but hides the inconvenient ones. It cannot behave like a pro‑government courier agency. It is the custodian of the rights of all MLAs and of the trust reposed in us by the people of Jammu & Kashmir,” he stated.
Citing Rule 179 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business, Lone pointed out that the Assembly Secretariat is legally bound to intimate members whether their resolutions have been admitted, disallowed, or admitted as amended by the Speaker. “The word used in the Rule is ‘shall,’ which makes it mandatory. Denial of information is a breach of the Rules,” he added.
The legislator further said that he has written to the Assembly Secretariat, demanding clarity on the status of his resolution concerning the 1987 elections. (KNO)

Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology & Environment and Tribal Affairs, Javed Ahmed Rana, today inaugurated a water supply project for the areas of Channi Himmat and Bahu and laid the foundation stone of a water supply augmentation project for Bathindi and Sunjwan, with the two projects having a combined estimated cost of ₹12.43 crore.MLA Bahu Vikram Randhawa, along with senior officers of the Jal Shakti Department and other concerned departments, were present on the occasion.The Minister inaugurated the water supply project for Channi Himmat and Bahu, executed at an estimated cost of ₹652.78 lakh. The project is aimed at ensuring regular and daily water supply to residents of the areas that have been facing shortages.The project included the drilling of new tubewells and allied works to augment the availability of drinking water and strengthen the existing supply arrangements.Addressing the gathering, the Minister said the completion of the project marks an important step towards resolving the water deficit in the affected areas and providing households with a more reliable supply of drinking water.He said that ensuring access to safe, adequate and dependable drinking water remains a key priority of the government, adding that the newly commissioned infrastructure would provide much-needed relief to residents and improve the overall water supply position in the area.Later, the Minister laid the foundation stone of the water supply improvement and augmentation project for Bathindi and Sunjwan, under SASCI, at an estimated cost of ₹590.50 lakh.The project is aimed at strengthening the existing water supply infrastructure and augmenting its capacity to meet the present and emerging requirements of the rapidly developing areas.Once completed, the scheme is expected to improve water availability and enhance the reliability of supply for residents of Bathindi and Sunjwan.The Minister directed the concerned officers to ensure that the Bathindi and Sunjwan augmentation project is completed within the stipulated timeline, while maintaining the prescribed standards of quality.He also stressed the need for proper operation and maintenance of the newly commissioned tubewells to ensure that the benefits of the completed project reach residents without interruption.The two projects form part of a broader series of inaugurations and foundation stone-laying ceremonies undertaken during the past week to strengthen and expand water supply infrastructure across Jammu.MLA Bahu Vikram Randhawa expressed gratitude to the Minister for taking up the projects and said the initiatives would provide significant relief to residents who had been facing difficulties due to inadequate water supply.Later, the Minister chaired a meeting with senior officers of the Jal Shakti Department to take stock of the water supply situation in the area and review the progress of ongoing and proposed works.During the meeting, the Minister directed the officers to prepare Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for all pending and proposed water supply schemes without delay, so that the projects could be processed for approval and funding at the earliest.Emphasising the importance of long-term planning, he asked the department to take into account population growth, future water demand and the changing requirements of urbanising areas while designing new and upgraded water supply schemes.The Minister also called for close coordination among field units and directed officers to ensure prompt and effective redressal of public grievances related to water supply.

Kashmir now fully integrated with India: Shah
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said BJP-led NDA Governments in 21 states will introduce Uniform Civil Code (UCC) before 2029.
Shah was speaking to reporters here while highlighting the achievements of the Centre over the last 12 years and the BJP’s 25-year journey under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
“Triple talaq has been abolished, giving Muslim women equal rights. We have introduced the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in several states and I am confident that in the 21 BJP-NDA ruled states, we will introduce the UCC before 2029,” Shah said. The next Lok Sabha polls are scheduled for 2029.
He said the Government had strengthened the country’s criminal justice system through the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and claimed that several states had recorded a 30 per cent increase in the conviction rate in a single year.
He also said a system was being established to ensure justice could be delivered within three years.
On national security, Shah said the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A had been achieved without a single drop of blood being shed or a bullet being fired, and asserted that Kashmir was now fully integrated with India.
He said the Government had ended five decades of Naxalism and signed more than 14 peace agreements in the country’s North-East region.
“More than 9,000 people have surrendered and today we have taken the North-East on the path of development,” Shah said.
He said surgical strikes, air strikes and Operation Sindoor have established a policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism.
On being asked whether the 1951 baseline would be used for implementing National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur, Shah said the Centre was holding discussions with its allies and political parties on the issue.
“We are discussing these issues with our allies and also with the political parties of Manipur. Whatever decision is taken, we will inform you,” he said.
Asked about illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators and their detection in cities such as Mumbai, Shah said the government would not disclose the tools used to identify them.
“You are asking the Home Minister to make the tools public and tell you how it will be done. Then how will we catch them? They will also come to know,” he quipped.
Shah reiterated the Government’s resolve to identify and deport illegal infiltrators from the country.
“I repeat our resolve that we will take out each and every illegal infiltrator from this country, identifying them one by one and sending them out,” he said.
On the Government’s anti-drugs campaign, Shah said he had recently launched the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’ and would visit every state as part of the campaign.
He said he had spoken to a Chief Minister the previous day and a full-day meeting would be held to ensure the campaign reaches the grassroots.
“It will definitely reach the grassroots and India will achieve victory over drugs,” Shah said. (PTI)

Centre to Challenge Allahabad HC Order Quashing Akriti Chaudhary’s NSA Detention: SG Mehta Tells SC
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that the Centre would challenge the Allahabad High Court’s decision to quash the detention of Delhi University student and activist Akriti Chaudhary under the National Security Act (NSA).
Mehta made the submission before a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and comprising Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana.
Referring to an earlier mention regarding a notice issued to a Greater Noida student for participating in a Cockroach Janta Party-led protest at Jantar Mantar, the Solicitor General clarified that the notice had been issued by an executive magistrate and not the Gautam Buddha Nagar district magistrate.
The CJI had earlier strongly criticised the Greater Noida executive magistrate for issuing the notice, questioning how the official “dared” to issue it despite an earlier order of the Supreme Court. The apex court said it would seek an explanation from the executive magistrate.
The bench also recalled the Allahabad High Court’s recent order quashing Chaudhary’s detention and awarding her compensation. In response, Mehta said, “That we are challenging.”
On September 2, the Allahabad High Court quashed Chaudhary’s detention under the NSA in connection with the April workers’ protest in Noida.
A division bench comprising Justices Atul Sreedharan and Achal Sachdev strongly criticised the manner in which the detention order was passed by the Gautam Buddha Nagar administration. The court warned that continued “despotic” conduct by officials could push Uttar Pradesh towards an “Orwellian Dystopia”.
The High Court also awarded Rs 5 lakh in compensation to Chaudhary and directed that the amount be recovered from the salary of Gautam Buddha Nagar District Magistrate Medha Roopam and other officers responsible for the detention proceedings, including the SHO.
Chaudhary, a history graduate of Delhi University, was arrested in connection with cases arising from the Noida workers’ protest in April 2026. The Uttar Pradesh Police subsequently invoked the NSA against Chaudhary and activist-journalist Satya Verma on May 13. Both were among several activists arrested in connection with the peaceful protest demanding higher wages.
The High Court also directed that its displeasure with the district magistrate and police officials involved in preparing the detention dossier be recorded in their service records.
The court observed that bureaucrats and police officers are entrusted with extensive powers because they carry the responsibility of protecting the constitutional and legal rights, dignity, honour and welfare of citizens.
