Lawyers Must See Themselves as Justice Facilitators First: Ex-CJI Chandrachud

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Aug 10: Former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud has urged lawyers to redefine their role as “facilitators of justice above all else” and to place ethics at the forefront of their profession.

Addressing law students on Saturday during the Vishnupant Advant lecture series on “The Present and Future of Law Business: Opportunities and Challenges”, Justice Chandrachud emphasised that there is no shortcut to success and called on future lawyers to remain lifelong learners and independent thinkers.

He stressed the importance of sympathy for the underprivileged, honesty in service, and continual skill upgrades, noting that the legal profession offers immense opportunities for those committed to learning and ethical practice.

Highlighting the need for greater female participation in law, he pointed to the growing presence of women in specialised and technical fields and said the same change should be reflected in the legal sector. He also encouraged law colleges to provide modern resources like libraries and databases, and urged senior lawyers to offer financial support to new entrants during their early career.
