Kargil, Leh Bodies Announce Silent Protest and Blackout Across Ladakh, Demand Release of Arrested Youth

Kargil, Oct 18: The Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) and the Apex Body of Leh have jointly announced a peaceful silent protest and a three-hour blackout across Ladakh on Saturday to express solidarity with the families of martyrs, those injured, and the detained youth.

According to the organizers, the silent march in Kargil will begin at Chowk Chullah at 10:00 a.m., proceeding to Zainabia Chowk before returning to Lal Chowk. The event will end with a five-minute silent prayer to honour those who lost their lives and those affected by the recent unrest.

A complete blackout will be observed from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., during which residents have been urged to switch off all lights in homes, shops, and institutions. Authorities have also been requested to turn off streetlights as a mark of mourning and unity.

In Drass, KDA member Mubarak Shah will hold a meeting with religious representatives to ensure peaceful coordination of the march and blackout. Religious leaders, especially Imams and Khateebs, have been asked to use Friday sermons to encourage public participation.

The KDA clarified that there will be no shutdown of schools, public transport, or businesses. However, participants are encouraged to wear black armbands or masks as a symbol of unity and respect. Merchant associations will assist by distributing black ribbons and masks.

Protesters will carry placards demanding a Supreme Court judge-led investigation, compensation for the families of those killed, and the unconditional release of all detained youth, including those arrested during recent protests.

The KDA and the Apex Body of Leh called on all political, social, and religious organizations to support the event. “This is not a protest of anger but one of dignity and unity. It represents the collective conscience and resilience of the people of Ladakh,” they said in a joint statement.

They added that Saturday’s protest and blackout will mark a significant moment in Ladakh’s history, showcasing the region’s commitment to justice through peaceful and disciplined means.
