BSNL 4G Towers to Be Upgraded to 5G Within 6–8 Months: Scindia

New Delhi, Oct 6: Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Monday said that Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s (BSNL) indigenously developed 4G network will be upgraded to 5G within the next six to eight months.

Speaking at the Kautilya Economic Enclave 2025, Scindia said India has entered the elite club of 4G technology developers — a space previously dominated by five global companies: Huawei, ZTE, Samsung, Nokia, and Ericsson.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled 92,564 towers connecting Kashmir to Kanyakumari and Bharuch to Arunachal Pradesh with India’s own 4G standard. Within the next six to eight months, these towers will be switched to 5G networks, providing end-to-end 5G capability across the country,” Scindia said.

The minister noted that despite global turbulence, conflicts, and climate shocks affecting economies, India continues to grow robustly, recording 7.8% GDP growth in the first quarter of FY25-26.

He added that India has become a fulcrum for the Global South and urged global investors to look to India as a hub of innovation and opportunity.

Highlighting India’s advancements in technology and manufacturing, Scindia said the country is now the world’s second-largest mobile phone producer and a key player in the communication, AI, and semiconductor value chain.

He also revealed that the upcoming India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2025 will host delegations from 150 countries, 7,000 delegates, 1,500 exhibitors, and over 1,000 use cases of 4G and 5G technologies, along with innovations in AI and quantum computing.
