JNU Seeks FIR Over ‘Provocative’ Sloganeering Against PM, Home Minister on Campus

New Delhi, Jan 6: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has sought the registration of an FIR after students allegedly raised “provocative, objectionable and inflammatory” slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah during an event on campus on Monday night, university officials said.
In a letter addressed to the Station House Officer of Vasant Kunj (North), the JNU administration stated that the slogans amounted to contempt of the Supreme Court and violated the university’s Code of Conduct. The communication, accessed by PTI, was sent by the university’s Security Department.
According to the letter, a programme titled “A Night of Resistance with Guerrilla Dhaba” was organised around 10 pm by students associated with the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU). Initially, the gathering—attended by around 30 to 35 students—was meant to commemorate the January 5, 2020 campus violence.
However, the administration claimed that the nature of the event changed following a recent judicial verdict on the bail pleas of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, after which certain participants allegedly raised slogans deemed inflammatory. A purported video of the incident has since surfaced on social media.
The university has named several students in its complaint, including current JNUSU president Aditi Mishra, stating that they were identified at the programme. The administration alleged that the sloganeering was “deliberate,” “repeated,” and had the potential to seriously disrupt public order, campus harmony and security.
Security personnel were present at the site and monitored the situation, the letter said. The Chief Security Officer has requested Delhi Police to register an FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Meanwhile, senior university officials said the administration held a meeting on Tuesday and has decided to initiate corrective action. “An internal inquiry will be set up. If students are found guilty of violating university rules, disciplinary action will be taken,” an official said, adding that an advisory will also be issued.
Students, however, said the event was part of an annual protest to condemn the January 5, 2020 violence, when masked attackers stormed the JNU campus, targeting students in multiple hostels and injuring at least 28 people, including then JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh.
