Shreyas Iyer Out of ICU, Stable After Spleen Injury in Sydney ODI: Sources

Sydney, Oct 28: Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer has been shifted out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is in stable condition after suffering a spleen laceration during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground, sources confirmed on Monday.

Initially thought to be a rib cage injury, scans later revealed that Iyer had sustained a spleen tear — a potentially serious condition that required immediate hospitalization. He was moved to a Sydney hospital’s ICU for observation but has since shown encouraging signs of recovery.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Iyer “sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage while fielding” and that subsequent scans revealed a laceration to the spleen. “He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well,” the board stated, adding that its medical team is monitoring his progress in consultation with specialists in both Sydney and India.

A spleen laceration, doctors say, can cause internal bleeding given the organ’s blood-filtering function, making prompt medical attention critical.

The injury occurred during the 33rd over of Australia’s innings when wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey mistimed a shot off Harshit Rana. Iyer, fielding at backward point, sprinted backward and dived full stretch to complete a stunning catch near deep third man before landing heavily on his side.

Team sources said Iyer’s family is expected to travel to Australia soon, while the Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney to oversee his recovery.

With Iyer responding positively to treatment, both team management and fans are hopeful of his full recovery in the coming weeks.
