Jammu, October 10, 2026: In recognition of World Palliative Care Day, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu conducted a Continuing Medical Education (CME) program titled “Pain Management – An Essential Part of Palliative Care” today at its college auditorium. The event convened approximately 130 healthcare professionals, including consultants and postgraduate residents, to discuss comprehensive pain management strategies aimed at enhancing the quality of life for patients battling cancer and other life-limiting diseases.
Organized by the Department of Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine, the program offered a essential platform for interdisciplinary discussions and knowledge exchange in the realm of palliative care and pain management. Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, Principal and Dean of GMC Jammu, led the initiative, supported by a dedicated organizing team.
The CME featured expert lecturers presenting on topics like pain assessment and cancer pain management, emphasizing the necessity of compassionate communication and tailored treatment approaches. Notable discussions centered around holistic palliative care practices and the crucial role of nursing professionals in supporting patients.
On this significant occasion, GMC Jammu inaugurated a dedicated palliative care file to promote and strengthen palliative care services, fostering a more systematic method for treating patients with serious illnesses. Dr. Rajesh Mahajan chaired the organizing committee, while team members including Dr. Madan Katoch and Dr. Naine Bhadrala worked tirelessly to ensure its success.
The program also showcased a creative poster competition with the theme “The Last Chapter Can Still Be Beautiful.” This initiative encouraged students and residents to explore and express their understanding of palliative care through artistic and scientific presentations, focusing on dignity and comfort for patients in their final stages of life.
Dr. Jasmine Chaudhary and Dr. Heena Saini facilitated the sessions, ensuring an interactive and engaging experience for all participants. The event concluded with an expressed commitment from all attendees to integrate palliative care into standard clinical practices, ensuring timely pain relief and compassionate support for patients facing life-threatening conditions.
