India Must Achieve Self-Reliance in Drone and Anti-Drone Technologies: CDS General Chauhan

New Delhi, July 16 – Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan emphasized the urgent need for India to become self-reliant in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS), calling it a “strategic necessity” in the face of evolving global warfare trends.

Speaking at an event held at the Manekshaw Centre, Gen Chauhan highlighted how recent international conflicts have revealed the powerful impact drones can have on the battlefield, often shifting tactical advantage far beyond their size or cost.

He pointed to Operation Sindoor as a clear demonstration of why India must develop drones and anti-drone systems tailored specifically to its terrain and operational needs. During this operation, Pakistan deployed unarmed drones and loitering munitions on May 10, but they failed to cause any significant damage to Indian infrastructure. Many were neutralized or recovered almost intact, showcasing India’s growing defensive capabilities.

The remarks were made during a workshop on reducing reliance on foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) for critical UAV and C-UAS components. The workshop was organized by Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ-IDS) in collaboration with the Centre for Joint Warfare Studies.

General Chauhan stressed that the rise of asymmetric drone warfare is making traditional military platforms more vulnerable, prompting a shift in air power doctrines and the urgent need to develop agile counter-drone strategies.

He warned against continued reliance on imported high-tech systems, noting that it hampers India’s readiness, production capabilities, and the availability of vital spare parts.

“Self-reliance in these technologies isn’t just about national pride,” he said. “It’s a matter of operational effectiveness and long-term strategic preparedness.”
